Global Job Search Trends for the next year

Since the pandemic, the labour market as we knew it has transformed and radically reinvented itself, resulting in a fundamentally altered employment environment. The new year will continue to usher in ever-evolving workplace trends and more flexible employment opportunities. Skills shortages such as art therapist assistant job and developing industries in technology will continue to influence the job market in 2023, and despite the economy slowing down, there will still be plenty of excellent employment prospects. Analysts across industries estimate that many of the seismic labour shifts in recent years will be long-term.

In this article, we teamed up with experts from job aggregator Jooble to take a closer look at some of the major trends influencing the workplace in 2023 and discuss what they will mean for current employees and those looking to change careers.

General employment trends for 2023
Everyone was caught unawares by the pandemic and wholly unprepared to deal with the resulting fallout in the workplace. Many governments and businesses are still frantically scrambling for ways to adapt to the “new normal” in the labour market as the traditional 9 to 5 workday was upended and work-from-home arrangements became increasingly common.

Since the shockwaves of the pandemic, exacerbated by difficult economic times, people are increasingly changing jobs in search of employment that provides flexible hours and more competitive salaries. With a gloomy economic outlook, a crisis in the cost of living, and political unrest dominating the news, employers will need to compete for the best talent in a tight labour market in the coming year. As a result, employees will be in a stronger bargaining position to demand better compensation, better benefits, remote work possibilities, as well as numerous other benefits.

In this article we take a look at some of the major job trends in the next year and discuss what they will mean for current employees and those looking to change careers.

Remote work remains at the forefront
Freedom to work remotely or in a hybrid employment environment has become the third most dominant reason when looking for a new job (the first two being salary and career opportunities). This will continue to be a major trend in the coming year. The ability to be flexible at work is something that employees have come to value highly and many are not prepared to give up post-pandemic. An equal number of people are choosing a “mixed” work paradigm. The hybrid home-office combination has become increasingly popular and offers the best of both worlds. According to recent surveys, 61% of professionals would be tempted to leave their current employment for a fully remote or hybrid opportunity.

The Great Resignation continues
Employer-employee relationships have shifted significantly post-pandemic. Workers are no longer afraid to leave their jobs in search of better and more flexible career opportunities. Similar to the US, "The Great Resignation" has found equal favour in the UK as over two million workers have changed jobs since the pandemic. This is the biggest transformation in the labour market in generations and it will continue to have a seismic impact on the workplace in 2023.

Growing numbers of workers are changing careers and taking risky professional steps, which is encouraging to those seriously thinking about making their own career transition. While many may be concerned about the threat of more competition for positions, the opposite is actually true as the power dynamic is moving away from employers and more in favour of employees.

Furthermore, the Great Resignation is forcing businesses to re-examine themselves and their HR policies, which has had the knock-on effect of improving overall working conditions significantly. Workers are calling for a better work-life balance, and in many instances, businesses have switched to the hybrid mode and some are seriously considering the four-day workweek.

The importance of the employee experience
A sizable number of workers have drawn a line in the sand and declared that "enough is enough," which has sent shockwaves through the labour market. Businesses are now paying close attention to what workers want from their job and their working conditions. In the upcoming years, the importance of the Employee Experience (EX) is expected to escalate significantly. In fact, a recent survey revealed that one in three respondents believed EX would overtake compensation as the most crucial component of a successful HR strategy by 2023.

Services provided by businesses to enhance EX may include mental health care (an urgent issue highlighted by the pandemic);  increased sick leave, allowances to cover employees' living expenses, as well as proactively recognizing employees' contributions to the workplace.

A global shortage of talent
The severe lack of talent on a global scale will continue to be a growing trend in 2023. The problem of talent shortage is by no means new. Even in the face of impending economic headwinds, the skills deficit that was sparked by the digital revolution and exacerbated by the pandemic is not likely to not abate in the coming years.

In this article we take a look at some of the major job trends in the next year and discuss what they will mean for current employees and those looking to change careers.

Worldwide talent shortages are at a 15-year high as both hard and soft skills are harder than ever to obtain, especially in the technology sector. For example, more businesses want personnel who are capable of handling sophisticated machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) systems. It is estimated that the shortage of skilled labour will result in 85 million job openings by 2030.

Final thoughts
These are some of the key employment trends that will be taking shape and solidifying in 2023, and some of them will undoubtedly motivate many people to reposition themselves in the job market. Never has the moment been greater to change careers and go for a job that is truly fulfilling.
